In this expository article, we describe a number of methods for studying high dimensional contact manifolds. We particularly focus on the concept of overtwistedness and looseness and their relation with geometric structures such as open books and surgery cobordisms. These notes are based on a lecture series given by the second author at the 2015 Gökova Geometry-Topology Conference, and built on the series of articles [8,9,10].
